There is something creepy about clowns, which is maybe why they get our attention. It’s weird, so weird. The movie “He Who Gets Slapped (1924)” was the inspiration for the cartoon on the homepage and is a truly frightening view of human cruelty, reflecting the terrible stress the entire world was under leading up to the crash of 1929 and the Great Depression.
Here are few studies of clowns, the pierrot, harlequin and cartoons riffing on the clown theme. It’s hard to imagine a clown character that would be distinct for our times when there are so many real life actors demanding our attention.
